Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH): Mental Health First Aiders: Workplace considerations

This short 6-page document by the IOSH, highlights areas of consideration for organisations who are designing and implementing an MHFA programme within their workplace. As revealed by research funded by IOSH, there are several considerations and limitations which organisation should be aware before implementing and MHFA programme. The document covers areas such as; prevention, professional limitation, choosing the right people as Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs), designing a suitable MHFA programme, supporting MHFAs, using MHFA more broadly across the organisation, having an MHFA co-ordinator, promoting training opportunities, accessibility of MHFAs and on-going monitoring of the MHFA programme. The authors also highlight other further resources available to support mental health within the workplace.

The interactive document has sections which focuses on having a whole organisation approach to mental health, evaluating the mental health support currently in place, creating a clear policy and role document for any mental health champions. For organisations who already have MHFA implemented, there are also details on recruiting MHFAs, support and development for MHFAs and promoting MHFA throughout the organisation. The guidance also signposts to useful external links and includes case study examples.

Created in 2018 by Mind, Heads Together and The Royal Foundation, the Mental Health at Work gateway provides a platform for multiple resources relating to mental health within the workplace. The website details guidance such as toolkits, tips, videos, courses, podcasts, templates and information from a range of organisations focusing on mental health at work. The search tools allow the user to easily navigate around the resources depending on their resource needs or by their workplace settings (e.g. by sector, workplace, role and size of the organisation).

Split into five steps, this guidance covers; understanding mental health, making a commitment to improve mental health at work, identifying ways to improve the workplace, educating the workforce about mental health and where to go for further support.
