Mental Health First Aid is a course that educates individuals how to recognise, understand and support those who may be developing a mental health problem. The course was first established in Australia in 2000 and is now recognised in 23 countries. In England 1,200 instructors have delivered the courses to more than 100,000 people.

This tool from Acas is a useful summary for managers on how to support team members with mental ill health back to work and/or perform at their best.  It covers the role of a manager, signs of mental ill health, actions you can take to help and how best to do them, supporting the rest of your team and managing absence related to mental ill health.  A number of useful resources are also provided, such as links to Mind’s Wellness Action Plans, tips on approaching a sensitive conversation regarding mental ill health, adjustments for staff experiencing mental ill health, a number of websites and a number of e-learning training courses.

This people managers’ guide to mental health was developed by Mind and the CIPD. The guidance was originally produced in 2011 but reviewed and updated in 2018. It contains information, practical advice and templates to help managers facilitate conversations about stress and poor mental health. Practical steps are also provided to help employers focus on prevention and create a mentally healthy workplace. The guide is designed for anyone who is involved in managing people whether your organisation is small or large.
